The Grand Arcade

The Grand Arcade Project was the single largest demolition project to be undertaken within the historic city centre of Cambridge, and notably required the carefully executed demolition and bulk excavation works to be carried out without affecting its normal daily operation.

This contract involved the asbestos removal and complete demolition of numerous mixed-use buildings of varying construction, which included the multi-storey Lion Yard car park and Magistrates Court. The works also involved partial demolition and designed temporary support of the retained and historic St Andrews Street frontage buildings.

Following on from the demolition phase, our works involved a significant bulk excavation of circa 7m depth to the entire 2.5 acre site. During this time we provided attendance on the first major archaeological dig in Cambridge City Centre, involving up to 60 Archaeologists to locate a medieval feature called the Kings Ditch.

The bulk excavation phase also required us to undertake prior installation of several extensive perimeter support systems to the 7m height retained perimeters. This included ‘silent’ installation of propped ‘zero clearance’ and robust cantilevered sheet piled solutions. We also carried out pile probing works to facilitate the concurrent installation of R.C. settlement piles as well as on site crushing of recovered demolition arisings for the piling platform.

One of the key challenges during the demolition and bulk excavation phase involved maintaining a live service road which bisected the site serving the adjoining Crown Plaza hotel and Lion Yard shopping centre. A temporary access road was constructed and H Smith designed and installed a temporary steel bridge maintaining HGV vehicular access to the hotel, under which the new and permanent access road was constructed. Once this was complete, the redundant access road was excavated down to suit the adjacent reduced level basement.

The project was successfully carried out within the strict environmental limits set on dust, noise, vibration and vehicular movements.
