High Rise & Explosives

High Rise Demolition

We have extensive experience of high-rise demolition (see Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Rowan Court projects). Towers and their environments are analysed to determine which of the following – or a combination of several – techniques apply:

  • Floor by floor dismantling with arisings being craned down
  • Floor by floor dismantling with arisings being chuted down in controlled zones
  • Use of super long reach excavator plant
  • Explosives

Many structures we demolish in sensitive urban surroundings such as Central London can also be deemed to be high-rise, often over ten storeys. These projects may be further complicated by environmental concerns and sometimes abutting or connected properties which need to be retained. In fact, by comparison, the demolition of a tower block is a much less complex challenge.

We undertake in-house all structural analysis of the structures to be demolished and their collapse mechanisms. We work with two specialist explosives ‘partners’. For examples of our use of explosives see projects at Rowan Court and the Canary Wharf Spine Road Bridge.
